In Spring/Summer 2014, GOA staffers along with three History teachers – Beth Calderone (The Blake School, MN), Ben Watsky (King’s Academy, Jordan), and Tim Morford (Columbus Academy, OH) began coordinating and planning an interscholastic version of 9th grade Big History. The Big History Project is, in a nutshell, a modern origin story – a compaction of 13.8 billion years of history, from the Big Bang to the present day, woven together by principles and theories from many disciplines.
Moving forward, member school teachers Beth, Ben, and Tim will each work with 14-18 9th grade students from their respective schools and with each other throughout the 2014-15 school-year collaborating, communicating, and deepening students’ foundation in world history. In September of 2013, GOA offered our first ever online college-credit course, Advanced Statistics & Data Science. This college-level course is available to GOA member school students. The course is taught by Grinnell’s own Shonda Kuiper, a trained GOA teacher. The course is available as a semester-long course (September – December 2014).
Additionally, our GOA Professional Development team recently visited the Grinnell campus to offer a 3-day workshop on blended learning for Grinnell faculty.
